the santa croce winter ball. one of juliette cornelia vanderbilt's favorite school events of all time. she loved attending the ball, even more than going to the annual back to school bonfire, which always was amazing. however, she felt that there was something magical about the masquerade ball. yes, she knew that it sounded corny, but it was true for her. she loved how wonderful it was, dressing up in a gorgeous dress and putting on a beautiful, custom crafted mask (even though she attended many black tie affairs throughout the year), then dancing all night long with handsome, mysterious men whose identities you did not know. juliette, a girl who had been given the nick name 'high class whore' back in her year nine, actually thought the whole concept of a masquerade ball was romantic. and even though she frequently stated that she was definitely not settling down and actually dating someone this year, a part of her, deep inside, actually wanted some wonderful guy to come in, sweep her off of her feet, and capture her heart. she wanted the first time that she fell truly in love to be like something out of a fairy tale, and what better place for that to happen than at the masquerade ball, where she looked just like a princess out of a fairy tale? that was the usual, normal juliette; always thinking of her appearance, and how good she looked.
however, having a fairy tale like night was not the only thing on her mind; she was also thinking about another event that happened every year at the winter ball: the crowning of this year's virgin mary. for the past three years, delilah barnes had received the award, and for good reason, too. the girl was the most virginal thing since, well, the real virgin mary. but over the summer, the girl had changed, lost her virginity, and had gained confidence, charm, and the attention of a large part of the male population at santa croce. to say that juliette was a little upset and jealous was an understatement.. 'extremely pissed off' and 'almost green with envy' fit her much better. the oldest of the vanderbilt clan was used to being the center of almost every guy at school's attention, so the fact that most of them were focused on delilah barnes made her very angry. a frown appeared on juliette's face at the thought of the girl as she stood in the doorway of santa croce academia's dining hall. the room had been decorated and looked gorgeous; the school had a large amount of funds, seeing as how the old money families donated part of their wealth to the school. it looked like a big amount of that yearly allowance had gone in to the ball.
thoughts of the crowning of this year's holy mary slipped back into her head. juliette's dark brown eyes sparkled and flickered. she knew that brigitte austerlitz, her best friend lillian's younger sister, was a shoo-in for the title. she was very close to the fourteen year old, but the younger girl was way to virginal. the eldest vanderbilt had attempted to instill an interest in boys in the girl, yet brigitte acted disgusted and and as if she found no liking in any boys whatsoever, something juliette found utterly confusing. when she was in year nine, she had already began to become a seductress. she flirted with older boys, worked her way into their pants, and soon became one of the most well known girls at school. of course, being a vanderbilt helped, but what really made her different from all of the other old money girls that were her age was the fact that she was very friendly with boys. but brigitte austerlitz seemed to be gaining the exact opposite reputation for herself, and juliette wasn't so sure if that was such a good thing. she felt almost like an older sister to her; after all, she and lillian were such good friends they were almost like sisters, and she looked out for and kept a watchful and protective eye over the fourteen year old. juliette didn't want brigitte to be known as the 'virgin of the year', and have that reputation pre-set for her. it would be completely unfair to have people vote for you to have that title, and she doubted that brigitte would want to be known as 'virgin mary' for the rest of her ninth year. juliette knew that she definitely would not want to have that memory for her first year at santa croce.
students wandered around the room, chatting with their friends and flirting with the opposite sex. a large group was surrounding a table: the voting box for this year's virgin mary. juliette stared at the table, where a large man was guarding the box. she decided to wait to cast her vote; she didn't want to vote for brigitte and give her the title of the most virginal girl at the school, but she couldn't think of anyone else that fit the position. the eldest vanderbilt looked around the room, trying to find one of her friends or siblings that she could discuss the problem with.

So every year for the Santa Croce Winter Ball, Louie was out of the country. She always forgot to attend even when he siblings would leave her messages reminding her over and over and over again the date and all. Her oldest sister was constantly trying to get her into some pretty frilly dress so she could make a good impression for the Vanderbilt family but if anything, Louie was probably as detached from her family as blue is from orange...if that makes any sense whatsoever. So this year she actually remembered. Why? It was on her bucket list of course and what was she going to wear? Yeah, she'd have the mask...
But she would, without shame, show up in that classic playboy bunny outfit. All black tiny suit that hugged her slender figure and made her already long legs look even longer, the cuffs, bow tie, ears, and then pumps to tie it all in together. But of course, she had a lazy trench coat, classically famous thanks to the movie Breakfast At Tiffany's, over her frame. As for her mask? A simple piece of black lace she pinned to either side of her head, her light brown, soft curls spilling sweetly around her face and down her slender shoulders as she slipped off the trench coat at the entrance. Luckily for her, that new art teacher she was cool with let her in...After all, she borrowed the outfit from her. Thank Goodness they were the same size...even though it was technically a stripper outfit...
Regardless, of course, everyone looked. It wasn't normal for something like this to happen but she seemed completely at ease and comfortable in her own skin. The truth/ She thought she looked fat. She always thought she looked fat. Her sisters were drop dead gorgeous without even trying and they had the old money personalities to go with it. Her? How many times had she been mistaken for new money just because she was practically a hippie? Countless...to embarrassing to say out loud. With that tiny white bunny tail wagging, though, she shamelessly went on over to the voting booth, moving her body slightly with the music and snapping her fingers with the beat. She actually wore makeup, for once. Some mascara, a tad bit of eyeliner on her upper lids, soft pink lipstick, and the necessary amount of blush so she wouldn't look like a doll or something. Regardless, the slender and tall seventeen year old did look stunning. Her senior year she'd wear a gown or something if she remembered to be in the country...
After all, she had a longer summer than most. She missed half of the first semester because she had been swimming with dolphins in New Zealand and forgot school started until she finally charged her cellphone and had a million and one missed calls from her siblings yelling at her for not showing up when it was her future and their family's reputation at stake. One would think they would get used to her forgetful and 'stoner' like behavior. She didn't think about the future. She lived in the now, "Dude, Brig for the win," she said softly to her older sister from behind as she reached around her to grab a pen and paper, her nails manicured and painted a glossy black. She scribbled down the name and popped it in the box, "Maybe I'll pop her cherry though, yeah? I should add it to the list..." the last bit she added absently as if making a mental note. It wasn't that she was spacey. No, she let the other Austerlitz take over in that department. She did pay attention to surroundings, she was just always so relaxed. Probably because she snorted a couple lines before coming here at her dorm room with a couple of guys.
Boys were awesome in her book. They were funny, rough, perverted, and made for great conversation once they found out she was more into females. She loved playing games with them like who could get the most chicks' numbers by the end of the night and such. Her parents seemed to strongly frown upon basically everything she did ever since she was a child and in order to escape it-she traveled...since the age of thirteen she was on planes going elsewhere. It didn't matter where. Usually she pointed to a globe and wherever it landed she went there. Middle of the ocean? Get on a cruise and go there or something. It didn't matter. She wanted to live her life and she wouldn't let family, reputation, and expectations hold her back-especially not her terrible grades. She only passed because her parents paid up. Whatever. They were only letters and numbers.
"Julie Bear...You look beautiful," She stepped back a bit to admire her sister and gave her a soft and genuine smile. It was just how Louie was. Always relaxed.

"oh my god," juliette thought as she spun around, her manolo high heeled stilettos turning on the marble floor of santa croce's dining hall as someone spoke to her. the eighteen year old twin's deep, dark brown eyes widened as she saw who the words had come from. "what. the. fuck?!" she snapped her mouth shut when she realized that she had actually spoken out loud, but how could she be expected to keep her thoughts in while looking at the person in front of her, her sister, louise edna vanderbilt. it wasn't her younger sister that shocked her so much, it was her attire. well, and the fact that she was a vanderbilt and she was wearing that. louie had on a play boy bunny costume, to a black tie affair! juliette swallowed deeply, then tilted her head to the side quickly to demand an answer. she stared at her seventeen year old sister, a slight appalled glare on her face. louise was now in her eleventh year at santa croce, and had not shown up to the winter masquerade ball any other year that she had attended the academy. yet here she was now, for the first time, in a stripper outfit. her jaw had dropped involuntarily in surprise, and was hanging open, her full lips forming an astounded, perfect 'o' shape. why? why was she wearing that? why was she even there? every year in the past, louise had always been out traveling the world for the ball, and now she had all of the sudden decided to show up, dressed like that. it was as if she were mocking the ball, which the oldest vanderbilt definitely did not approve of. juliette stared at louie, her eyebrows raised, with an almost comical, but definitely shocked look on her face. this was the santa croce academia winter masquerade ball. they were not at some college frat house halloween party or the set of some porn photo shoot.
after a few minutes of staring at her younger sister (who didn't look that bad, not surprisingly. she was a vanderbilt after all, and if she was wearing a gorgeous ball gown instead of the barely-there bunny costume, she would have looked stunning), juliette finally regained the ability to speak. she thought back to her sister's stoner- like words, then rolled her eyes. the eighteen year old watched as louise wrote brigitte austerlitz's name down on a piece of paper, then tossed it in the voting box for that year's virgin mary. "louie. what the hell are you wearing?!" she hissed at her sister, tapping her french manicured nails against the voting table, her wide eyes narrowing slightly. "do the words 'black tie affair' mean anything to you?! what were you thinking?!" juliette sighed, then took a deep breath in an attempt to calm down. louise knew better than to do this, she knew that not only was she embarrassing herself, but the entire vanderbilt family. she closed her eyes, and held them shut, hoping that the scene was a nightmare, and that when she opened her eyes and woke up, that she would not remember any of it. juliette snapped her eyes open.. and her sister was still standing in front of her wearing a play boy bunny costume. she glared at her sister for a moment, before replying to her words. "i'm not voting for brigitte- what if she doesn't want to win? i actually like her, and i don't want to give her a reputation that she doesn't want. at least, i wouldn't want it." she wrinkled her nose at her sister's remark about 'popping her cherry'. "louie, don't speak like that.." she knew that her sister, well, liked girls, and she really didn't approve. juliette loved boys, and spent a lot of her time seducing, flirting with, and screwing the ones that were very attractive, had had a huge bank account for a long, long time, or were considered 'elite' in the social world. she wanted nothing to do with girls, and found nothing attractive about them at all, in a romantic or lustful sense. yes, she preferred girls as friends, but not as lovers, like louie did. "shit, why are you even here? i mean, i know that i've been begging you to come to the ball for years now, but i didn't mean for you to come dressed like this," she said, her lips pursed disapprovingly as she stared at the bunny ears.
juliette huffed, then looked away, moving her eyes to the voting table. she wasn't going to vote for brigitte, no, not when she was so certain that she could yet instill a lust for boys in the fourteen year old. she remembered reading about one of the leviton girls being up for the crown on holy mary's gossip twitter blog, so she leaned over, grabbed a pen, and signed the girl's name in her neat, loopy, cursive writing. she looked back up when she heard her sister speak again, telling her that she looked beautiful. juliette couldn't keep from smiling, and her eyes lit up at the compliment. "thanks. you look.. ridiculous, i'm sorry!" she said truthfully, laughing.

"I'm wearing a black tie," she shrugged, pointing to the bow tie around her neck. Louie by no means seemed offended by her sister's words. It hadn't been the first time her sister said something like that about what she was wearing, "And it's not like I'm embarrassing Ms. Vanderbilt or whatever," she chuckled. She hadn't called their mother mom or any other form of the word since they were toddlers. It was something she got used to when their mother started treating her a bit differently because, well, Louie just wasn't the type of person to remain caged in for too long and their parents, because they couldn't control her and her troublesome nature like the others, obviously had to treat her differently. They would force her into etiquette classes, piano lessons, anything to keep her out of trouble and it usually didn't work, "She practically disowned me...Do I have to tell you the story again? I really hate telling the story, Julie Bear," she said this a bit sarcastically but was joking as she always did especially since her stoner-like drawl didn't really help her whenever she was trying to be taken seriously.
But it was the truth. Their mother practically disowned Louie the night she announced to the family that she liked girls. She did explain herself, though. She said that she tried it-being with a guy...And it wasn't just once. She tried it several times. Granted she was only thirteen but she honestly felt only the slightest of an attraction and it was only the physical. She saw them more as friends if anything but as lovers it just...it didn't click with her. She explained that she liked how girls were just more understanding...they understood why she had basically been running away since she was ten, why she started smoking by twelve, drinking, sex, and drugs by thirteen...They understood why she felt so utterly alone in the family. Guys...well, she couldn't connect with them on that level. She played video games with them, hung out with them, played sports...In the end she was tired of getting hit on by them. She liked the thrill of the chase and chasing girls was what she did best.
Their mother ran to the bathroom to barf and their father told her basically to get the fuck out and to not come home until she was either pregnant or had a boyfriend. So she didn't come home until Gracie's birthday. She stayed with friends until then. It started off with running away to friends' houses to, by the time she was fifteen, running away to different countries because staying in the same country wasn't enough any more. She loved her family but at times, like these, she felt like a complete alien to them. She didn't act like them, think like them...She only shared their last name but even then it was why she didn't consider herself a Vanderbilt. She was simply Louie-standing her own ground, "It's on the list, sis," she said it a bit seriously after Julie said she looked ridiculous. Everyone knew her bucket list. It was like Louie's Bible, "Don't mock the list," she really did follow that list practically religiously. She started it when she was thirteen and technically, practically, moved out of the house. It didn't seem like their parents cared much because they didn't go after her after she announced that she liked boys. She failed their expectations and the only was to redeem herself was...
"But I'm engaged," she glanced up at her and smirked but she was right back to her sarcastic tone, "and guess what? It's the headmaster's son. Funny, huh? The headmaster hates my fuckin' guts, dude...Forcereal," she laughed softly as she waved to some of the guys who she normally hung out with. Everyone and their mother knew she liked chicks so the majority of the guys didn't bother hitting on her..but it didn't mean they wouldn't look from afar. She knew they silently wished she was straight...or pray she got drunk because when she was drunk it didn't matter if you had a dick or a vagina-she was going to screw you if you were attractive-dead broke or rolling in money. Turning around slightly, she shook her butt a bit in their direction with the tiny white fluff bunny tail and they seemed to cheer as she laughed and turned back around, grabbing a drink, "This outfit makes me look fat," she mumbled to herself once she had her attention back on her sister, "Have you seen Leon? I gotta tell him I'm back from Brazil...Which was great by the way. Clara and I had sex all the time. Total blast,' just in case her sister asked where she had been, with who, and what they had been doing-she summed it up for her. But Louie was a horrible liar and thus it was obvious that Brazil hadn't been a blast from how quickly she dismissed it.
Brazil had been bittersweet and the country would forever remain that way for her.
